Safety whitening procedures – home and in-office teeth whitening

The interest for teeth whitening is constantly growing. Not everyone has perfectly white teeth. The basic whiteness (that is, brightness) of teeth depends on genetic and lifestyle factors as well.  The color of teeth is determined by the pigment particles found in the enamel and the tooth material underneath it.
Although teeth are generally white, this can unfortunately change with age, because consumption of foods and drinks with artificial coloring has a significant effect on tooth color.

WHAT CAUSES TOOTH DISCOLORATION?

Regular consumption of foods with a strong coloring effect (such as black coffee or beetroot) can have a negative impact on tooth color. Smoking also plays a significant role: over years, a yellowish discoloration develops on the teeth of heavy smokers.
Inadequate (not regular, inefficient) dental care also leads to discoloration, since plaque can turn into tartar if it stays on the tooth surfaces for a longer time. Tartar is a yellowish-brown substance, which can cause bigger problems than simply aesthetic issues. Because it is a breeding ground for pathogenic bacteria, it also contributes to the development of serious dental diseases (such as periodontal disease).

OUR CLINIC OFFERS SEVERAL DIFFERENT WHITENING TECHNOLOGIES

For our in-office (in-chair) whitening procedures we use PrevDent, Opalessence and Novon White Dental Beauty products. Both at-home and in-office whitening technologies are safe and painless, and they both offer long-lasting and spectacular results.
Teeth whitening procedures can brighten the color of teeth by up to 6-8 shades. It is not a miracle technology, but it does wonders for your teeth.

Tartar removal (scaling) is recommended before whitening in both cases. If you’re not sure how to choose, we can help find the best solution for you.

IN-OFFICE TEETH WHITENING

IN-OFFICE TEETH WHITENING – BRITESMILE & PREVDENT

The main advantage of in-office treatments is that they provide a remarkable whitening effect, often within 1.5 hours. In the whitening procedure, a pH-neutral gel is applied to the teeth and activated by a blue light. Depending on the discoloration, 3 (or in some cases, 4) therapy sessions are needed, each lasting 20 minutes – while you can relax, listen to music or watch a movie. Note that the results of Brite Smile teeth whitening depend on the initial color and on how each patient’s teeth react to whitening. The in-office teeth whitening technology we offer is completely safe and does not damage the teeth, fillings or crowns. Whitening has one unpleasant side effect: teeth can become sensitive for a time. It is important to know that whitening only works on the color of natural teeth. It cannot change the color of fillings, crowns and bridges.

TEETH WHITENING AT HOME

Whitening must only be used on healthy, clean teeth surfaces. To achieve the best results and the brightest color, the teeth should be cleaned of tartar (by dental scaling) before the whitening procedure. The teeth should also be prepared for the procedure in the days before the treatment. To apply the Opalessence® whitening gel to your teeth, you use a special dental tray that suits your individual needs and is shaped precisely to the contours of your teeth. This dental tray is prepared by our laboratory after taking an impression. It’s made of soft plastic, which is comfortable to wear. The whitening result can vary from person to person since it is influenced by the original color of the teeth. The overnight whitening kit contains a gel with 16% active ingredient. Based on user experience, 3 to 5 nights are usually enough to achieve the expected color. Some people only need two sessions, while others might require more to achieve the desired effect.
