WHEN DO YOU NEED A SINUS LIFT?
A sinus lift might be necessary if the loss of molars causes the jawbone to grow thin (atrophy), because there is not enough pressure on this area. The maxillary sinus is located above the premolars and molars, and extends gradually with age, thinning the bone walls around. Sinus lift is a procedure which aims to make the surrounding bones thicker, in which a bone substitute is implanted to help develop a stable bone structure in a couple of months which can be used as a proper base for dental implants.
THE PROCEDURE STEP BY STEP
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and is usually painless, thanks to the use of the most modern anesthetic substances and technologies. During the surgery a flap is created first, after which a hole is drilled into the side wall of the sinus cavity. Following this, the mucous membrane lining the inside of the sinus is lifted gently with delicate tools. We insert a bone substitute substance under the mucous membrane, and if the bone is at least 5 mm thick, we can immediately carry out the implantation at the time of bone grafting. If the vertical height of the bone is less than 5 mm, we need to wait six months with placing the implant.
The bone substitute substance we use in the procedure is a product called “Bio Oss”: a lyophilised, sterile organic scaffold for bone from a biological source. In some cases, the bone also needs to be widened laterally: in this case, we insert a collagen membrane and fix it to the bone surface. This membrane is absorbed within a few months. The surgery is completed by placing the sutures. We ask you to eat before the surgery, because you won’t be able to eat again until the effect of the anesthetic has worn off.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW AFTER THE SURGERY
Do not eat again after the surgery until the numbing effect of the anesthetic has worn off. Drinking liquids is allowed. It is important to ice the area: for this, apply facial cream first to the region that needs cooling, then wrap a cooling gel pack in a piece of cloth, and place it on the area for 5 minutes – repeat the cooling several times with 5 minutes pauses in between. You will also need antibiotics and painkillers: your treating dentist will inform you about these after the surgery. It is also recommended to take probiotics along with the antibiotic, in order to prevent gastrointestinal side effects. In the first two weeks, the affected area should only be cleaned by rinsing or with a soft (surgical) toothbrush. Cleaning the oral cavity will be a bit more difficult for a time, but good oral hygiene is essential for successful healing. Rinse your mouth with Curasept ADS 220 solution twice a day after brushing. Use the concentrated solution without dilution: swish it around your mouth for at least a minute, and do not rinse afterwards. Soft foods are recommended.
It is advised to avoid vigorous physical activity for 2 weeks following the surgery. Bending over and lifting is forbidden! After sinus lift, you need to avoid blowing your nose for at least 2 weeks. It is also advised to use nasal decongestant drops for a few days. Sneezing is only allowed with the mouth open! Smoking should be absolutely avoided!
Stitches are usually removed a week after the procedure.
Important! You have to attend the follow-up appointments even if you don’t feel any complaints.
POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS

A műtéti terület fájdalma természetes jelenség, melyet fájdalomcsillapító gyógyszerekkel hatásosan tudunk csillapítani. A fájdalom ritkán a nyakba és arcizmokba is kisugározhat. Felléphet átmeneti szájnyitási korlátozottság is, mely miatt tanácsos pár napig pépes vagy folyékony ételeket fogyasztani.
A műtét után arcduzzanat alakulhat ki, mely egyénenként változó lehet, általában a műtét utáni második-harmadik napon a legkifejezettebb, majd a későbbiekben napról-napra fokozatosan csökken a mértéke. Esetenként a
duzzanat teljes visszahúzódása hossabb időt, akár egy-két hetet is igénybe vehet. Az arc és a nyak bőre alatt a műtéti területről a szövetek közé szivárgó, felületes vérömleny miatt különböző bőrelszíneződések alakulhatnak ki, melyek néhány héten belül maguktól felszívódnak.
Ritkán előforduló mellékhatások és szövődmények
A műtét során előfordulhat a nyálkahártya sérülése, melyet általában az operatőr kollagénmembránnal zár, esetenként azonban a sérülés akár a csontpótlás elvégzését kontraindikálhatja.
Kialakulhat az arcüregi nyálkahártya gyulladása, mely általában antibiotikum kezelés hatására gyógyul. Elhúzódó folyamat esetében szükség lehet az arcüreg műtéti feltárására, és a gyulladt nyálkahártya, vagy az esetlegesen bekerülő csontpótló anyag eltávolítására is. Előfordulhat az arcüreg feletti bőrterület zsibbadása, mely általában csak átmeneti, de előfordulhatnak hosszabb ideig, vagy tartósan kialakuló érzészavarok is. Ez szerencsére nagyon ritka, és az arc mozgását egyáltalán nem befolyásolja. A műtét után ritkán kialakulhat utóvérzés, mely további kezelést tesz szükségessé.
